Technical Committee

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to a nationally consistent assessment process for assessment of International Medical Graduates (IMGs), consistent with the principles of the National Health Workforce Strategic Framework, and directed health ministers to implement initiatives. The IMG Implementation Committee agreed to the establishment of a Technical Committee to continue to oversee and review the implementation process in participating jurisdictions.

The roles and responsibilities of the Technical Committee are to:

  • Coordinate and oversee the evaluation and review of the implementation processes.
  • Oversee and, where necessary, advise the Australian Medical Council Expert Panel.
  • Oversee, and advise on, transitional provisions for the implementation of the national assessment processes.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure coordination of implementation processes.
  • Identify barriers that might prevent timelines being met.
  • Consult as necessary with appropriate stakeholder and expert groups including Colleges and Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
  • Liaise closely with the Health Workforce Principal Committee on the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme
  • Review and provide expert advice to the Health Workforce Principal Committee on the policies and administrative processes for implementation.
  • Report to each meeting of the Health Workforce Principal Committee.
  • Liaise with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to review visa administrative processes, in particular for the Occupational Trainee (442) visa.
